My mom started sleeping with the tv...

My mom started sleeping with the tv...

My mom started sleeping with the tv on after we all left the house. At first I thought it was just a custom... until one night i slept with her and understood the truth. It was almost two in the morning when I woke up to drink water. The blue TV light kept illuminating the empty room... and my mom was asleep in the recliner, cuddling herself like she was cold. Came slowly to turn off the TV.. but before i did i heard her sleep talking. “Leave it lit... so it looks like there are people in the house. ”

I felt something break inside me. My mom wasn't afraid of the dark. He was afraid of the silence. To the silence of a house where there used to be laughter. In the silence of a kitchen full of dishes that no one uses anymore. To the silence of waiting for visits that almost never arrive. To the silence of spending days without hearing someone say, "How did you wake up today, Mom?". ”
And while I was going about my life, working, going out and saying I was "too busy"... she learned to sleep listening to other people's voices because her children's voices were no longer there. I couldn't sleep that night. I kept staring at her tired hands.. the same hands that held me when i was scared. The same ones that gave me food even when she didn't have dinner. Same ones that never let me feel alone. And I understood something that really hurt me:
There are parents who don't need money... they need presence. Because there comes a time when older people stop asking for company... to not feel like a burden. And that's the saddest part. Who gave us a house full of love... they end up looking for comfort in the noise of a television on so as not to feel the abandonment of their own children.
